Eye Test for Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration Test

Comprehensive macular degeneration testing at Clear Vision Optical, Dallas. Catching central vision changes early, before it’s too late.

A macular degeneration test checks the health of your macula, the part of your retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Early age related macular degeneration often has no symptoms, so regular testing is the only reliable way to catch it early. At Clear Vision Optical in Dallas, Melbourne, our macular degeneration test is bulk billed for all eligible Medicare patients and included in every comprehensive eye exam.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a progressive eye condition affecting the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision. It does not cause total blindness, but it can make reading, driving, and recognising faces harder over time.

There are two main types. Dry age related macular degeneration develops slowly as the macula thins over many years. Wet age related macular degeneration progresses faster, caused by abnormal blood vessels leaking fluid beneath the retina. Around one in seven Australians over 50 show some evidence of the condition.

Common Macular Degeneration Symptoms

In its early stages, macular degeneration symptoms are easy to miss. As the condition progresses, these are the symptoms you have to watch out for:

  • Straight lines appearing wavy or bent.
  • A blurred or dark patch developing in the centre of your vision.
  • Difficulty reading fine print, even with your usual glasses.
  • Trouble recognising faces.
  • Needing brighter light for close work.
  • Increased sensitivity to glare.
  • Colours appear less vivid than they used to.

Noticed any of these changes, or haven’t had your eyes checked in a while? A macular degeneration test can tell you if there’s cause for concern.

Why an Eye Test for Macular Degeneration Matters

Why an Eye Test for Macular Degeneration Matters

The earliest stages of age related macular degeneration rarely cause symptoms. If you notice that there’s vision changes then the condition may already have progressed. An eye test for macular degeneration can detect drusen, tiny deposits beneath the retina, years before you would notice any difference yourself.

One in six Australians with macular degeneration experience some vision impairment, rising to almost fifteen percent by age 80. Regular testing means your eyes can get treatment early.

What Happens During a Macular Degeneration Test?

A macular degeneration test at Clear Vision Optical is thorough, comfortable, and non-invasive. It includes:

Amsler Grid Assessment

A grid of straight lines with a dot at the centre. Lines that appear wavy, broken, or blurred can indicate early changes to the macula.

Dilated Eye Examination

Eye drops widen your pupils, giving your optometrist a clear, detailed view of your retina and macula to check for drusen, pigment changes, or abnormal blood vessels.

OCT Eye Scan

The OCT Eye Scan captures detailed cross-sectional images of your retina, revealing the earliest structural changes to the macula, often before they are visible during a standard examination.

Digital Retinal Imaging

A high resolution photograph of the back of your eye creates a permanent record, so even the smallest change can be tracked over future visits.

All these tests are non-invasive, straightforward, and bulk billed for eligible Medicare patients.
